Summary

This article contains information on how to complete an Endorsed External Organisation Representation LX.

What is the External Organisation Representation LX?

The External Organisation Representation Learning Experience (LX) is an Endorsed LX that can be used to document a pharmacist's involvement in a committee or working group for a professional organisation that is outside of their primary place of employment.

It recognises that the individual is practicing as a subject matter expert or using experience in a specific area of practice to contribute to the deliverables of the committee or working group over a substantial period of time.

This LX aims to support self-reflection on how their involvement in the working group or committee has influenced current or future practice, and to help pharmacists set developmental goals for future contributions of this nature.

Examples

  • Appointed member of the AdPha Leadership committee in a chosen practice area

  • Member of a state or federal government advisory committee

  • Committee member for a pharmacy member organization e.g. branch committee or board sub committee

  • Member of a medication safety committee at an aged care facility

  • Board director role of a organization relevant to your scope of practice

External Organisation Representation Process

Prepare

Engage

Reflect

  1. The pharmacist is invited to be a member or a working group or committee at an organisation outside of their primary place of employment. This position is offered in recognition of the individual's experience and expertise in their chosen area of practice.

  1. The pharmacist holds the position/membership for a significant period of time and contributes to deliverables.

  1. The pharmacist engages in self-reflection to record the impact of experience on current and/or future pharmacy practice.

  2. Attach evidence of participation with external organisation and role.

The total time to document the Endorsed External Organisation Representation LX should take between 10-15 minutes.

An Endorsed External Organisation Representation LX is best documented once the pharmacist has held the position/membership for a significant enough time to allow them to contribute to the deliverables/outcomes and therefore allow them to engage in self-reflection.

Learning Experience Details

The Endorsed External Organisation Representation LX requires the pharmacist to document the following information:

Date

Document the date that the LX is being recorded (involvement in the committee or working group will have occurred over a period of time and/or may be ongoing).

Brief Description

Provide a brief description of the experience. Some examples of the type of information that may included in this section are:

  • The name of the working group or committee

  • The pharmacist's role and responsibilities in the working group or committee

  • The objectives or scope of work of the working group or committee

  • A summary of what was involved in the experience

  • The specific enabling competencies that apply to this experience (see practice recognition level section below).

Professional Organisation/Conference

Specify the name of the organisation or professional body to which the committee or working group reports or under whose governance it operates.

Contribution to Profession

Provide a summary of the key deliverables/outcomes/projects that the pharmacist has contributed to while they are a member of this working group or committee. This section should include the impact their contribution has had on the pharmacy profession (or alternative target audience).

Area of Practice

Provide details of the area of practice associated with the position. This is a free text area which allows subspecialities or multiple areas to be documented. However the areas documented may align with the ANZCAP speciality areas of practice.

Remember if you are including the LX in a recognition portfolio then the area of practice documented in the LX must align with the speciality area that you are being recognised in.

Practice Recognition Level

The pharmacist should indicate in the LX which of the three levels of recognition (Pharmacist Resident, Pharmacist Registrar or Pharmacist Consultant) they are currently practicing at. When determining which level of recognition aligns with their experience, they are encouraged to refer to the ANZCAP recognition definitions and descriptors.

The Endorsed External Organisation Representation LX is mapped to:

  • Domain 1 & 4 of the National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2016.  Please note that not all the domain 1 & 4 indicators listed in this document may be relevant to this Learning Experience.

  • Domain 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Competence Standards for Pharmacists in Aotearoa New Zealand Pharmacists, 2023. Please note that not all the Domain 1, 2, 3 and 4 behaviours listed in these competence standards may be relevant to this Learning Experience.

Reflection & Goal Development

The purpose of this LX is to support self-reflection on how the experience has influenced current or future professional practice, and to help the pharmacist set developmental goals for future contributions of this nature.

Reflection

The pharmacist is asked to independently reflect and document the strengths and areas for development identified while completing this experience.

Development Goals

The pharmacist is encouraged to utilize the SMART goal technique to set any learning or developmental goals that are identified from their reflection on this experience.

Supporting Evidence

The External Organisation Representation LX is an Endorsed LX therefore supporting evidence is mandatory (indicated by the *). Examples of supporting evidence that should be included in this LX includes:

  • Terms of Reference for the working group or committee and/or

  • Meeting minutes or agenda (if approved to share) and/or

  • Evidence of key deliverables/outcomes/projects that the pharmacist has contributed to while they are a member of this working group or committee and/or

  • Confirmation from the external organisation of their invitation or thanks for the pharmacists contribution to the working group or committee

Remember that supporting evidence in an LX is a great way to showcase your skills and knowledge. The LX details and supporting evidence can be shared using a custom portfolio. So use supporting evidence that best showcases your experience and impact!

Collaborator

Pharmacists may engage in discussion with professional peers, mentors or managers to encourage reflective practice. However, this is an Endorsed Learning Experience (LX) and therefore the LX should be completed independently by the pharmacist without collaboration

LX Documentation

Evidence of representation in an external organisation is documented directly into the ANZCAP digital platform as an Endorsed External Organisation Representation LX. The LX is an electronic template which allows you to directly document all of the required information and attach the required supporting evidence.

For further step by step instructions on how to do this please refer to the How to complete a Learning Experience article.
