Summary
This article contains information on how to complete an Endorsed Publication LX.
What is the Publication LX?
The Publication Learning Experience (LX) is an Endorsed LX that recognises a pharmacist's contribution to scientific, clinical and/or academic progress in their chosen area of practice through evidence of publication of a research project or article in a professional journal or peer-reviewed publication.
This LX aims to support self-reflection on how the publication has influenced current or future practice, and to help pharmacists set developmental goals for future contributions of this nature.
Examples
Published research manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal
Published area of practice/topic article in the:
Australian Journal of Pharmacy (AJP),
Australian Pharmacist (AP),
Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research (JPPR),
Retail Pharmacy (RP),
In The Know (ITK), or
Other publication as relevant to scope of practice
If the publication LX is being included in an ANZCAP recognition portfolio, then the content of the publication should not be included in another type of LX for the same recognition portfolio.
For example, if the research project had previously been documented in a Collaborative or Autonomous Research Activity LX (prior to it progressing to publication) then once it progresses to publication it could be documented a second time as a Publication LX. However both LXs can not be included in the same recognition portfolio. For participation in a research project. The Endorsed Publication LX supersedes the Collaborative or Autonomous Research Activity LX.
Publication Process
Prepare
Engage
Reflect
Pharmacist completes a research manuscript or article that is accepted in a journal relevant to pharmacy practice or their specific area of practice.
Pharmacist engages in self-reflection to document the impact of the experience on current and/or future pharmacy practice.
Attach evidence of the publication.
The total time to document the Endorsed Publication LX should take between 10-15 minutes.
An Endorsed Publication LX is best documented after the pharmacists work has been published.
Learning Experience Details
The Endorsed Publication LX requires the pharmacist to document the following information:
Date
Document the date that the research or article was published.
Brief Description
Provide a brief description of the experience. Some examples of the type of information that may be included in this section are:
The time taken and process involved from initial draft to final publication.
A summary of the research project or the article topic included in the publication.
Why the experience aligns with this type of LX (i.e. what knowledge and skills does it show)
The specific enabling competencies that apply to this experience (see practice recognition level section below).
Journal or Publication Name
Name of the professional journal or peer-reviewed publication that the research manuscript or article is published in.
Research Project Role
The role of the pharmacist in the research project or article team (e.g. first author, principal investigator).
Area of Practice
Provide details of the area of practice associated with the publication content. This is a free text area which allows subspecialities or multiple areas to be documented. However the areas documented may align with the ANZCAP speciality areas of practice.
Remember if you are including the LX in a recognition portfolio then the area of practice documented in the LX must align with the speciality area that you are being recognised in.
Practice Recognition Level
The pharmacist should indicate in the LX which of the three levels of recognition (Pharmacist Resident, Pharmacist Registrar or Pharmacist Consultant) they are currently practicing at. When determining which level of recognition aligns with their experience, they are encouraged to refer to the ANZCAP recognition definitions and descriptors. This provides further guidance on markers of performance for each ANZCAP recognition level.
The Publication LX is mapped to:
Domain 5 of the National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2016. Please note that not all the domain 5 indicators listed in this document may be relevant to this Learning Experience.
Domain 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Competence Standards for Pharmacists in Aotearoa New Zealand Pharmacists, 2023. Please note that not all the Domain 1, 2, 3 and 4 behaviours listed in these competence standards may be relevant to this Learning Experience.
Reflection & Goal Development
The purpose of this LX is to support self-reflection on how the experience has influenced current or future professional practice, and to help the pharmacist set developmental goals for future research or publication opportunities.
Reflection
The pharmacist is asked to independently reflect and document the strengths and areas for development identified while completing this experience.
Development Goals
The pharmacist is encouraged to utilize the SMART goal technique to set any learning or developmental goals identified from their reflection on this experience.
Collaborator
Pharmacists may engage in discussion with professional peers, mentors or managers to encourage reflective practice. However, this is an Endorsed Learning Experience (LX) and therefore the LX should be completed independently by the pharmacist without collaboration.
Supporting Evidence
The Publication LX is an Endorsed LX and therefore supporting evidence is mandatory (indicated by the *). Examples of supporting evidence that should be included in this LX includes:
A copy of the published article or research manuscript
Remember that supporting evidence in an LX is a great way to showcase your skills and knowledge. The LX details and supporting evidence can be shared using a custom portfolio. So use supporting evidence that best showcases your experience and impact!
LX Documentation
Evidence of a publication experience is documented directly into the ANZCAP digital platform as an Endorsed Publication LX The LX is an electronic template which allows you to directly document all of the required information and attach the required supporting evidence.
For further step by step instructions on how to do this please refer to the How to complete a Learning Experience article.
