Summary
This article contains information on how to complete an Endorsed Conference Research Activity LX.
What is the Conference Research Activity LX?
The Conference Research Activity Learning Experience (LX) is an Endorsed LX that can be used to document a pharmacist's contribution to scientific, clinical and/or academic progress in their chosen area of practice through presentation of a poster or oral presentation at a professional conference. The presented work may include original research, case studies or quality improvement/professional practice projects.
This LX aims to support self-reflection on the impact of this conference experience on the pharmacists' current or future practice, and to help pharmacists set developmental goals for future practice.
The LX can be used for inclusion towards ANZCAP recognition.
Examples
Abstract submission accepted for a presentation at a conference
Abstract submission accepted for a poster at a conference
Conference Research Activity Process
Prepare
Engage
Reflect
The pharmacist completes an abstract that is accepted at a pharmacy or area of practice specific conference as either a poster or presentation via a peer review approval process.
The pharmacist attends the conference and shares their research, case study or QI project in the accepted format.
The pharmacist engages in self-reflection to record the impact of experience on current and/or future pharmacy practice.
Attach supporting evidence
The total time to document the Endorsed Conference Research Activity LX should take between 10-15 minutes
An Endorsed Conference Research Activity LX is best completed retrospectively i.e. after the abstract has been accepted and the pharmacist has attended and presented at the conference.
Learning Experience Details
The Endorsed Conference Research Activity LX requires the pharmacist to document the following information:
Date
Document the date that the work was presented at the conference.
Brief Description
Provide a brief description of the format and content of the work presented at the conference. Some examples of the type of information that may included in this section are:
The format of the conference activity (e.g. oral presentation or poster)
A summary of the content/piece of work (e.g. original research, case studies or quality improvement/professional practice projects)
A summary of the pharmacists' role in the content presented (e.g. principal investigator, project lead) and/or
The specific enabling competencies that apply to this experience (see practice recognition level section below).
Professional Organisation/Conference
Provide the name of the organisation, professional body or conference where the oral or poster was presented. A target audience of the conference may also be included.
Area of Practice
Provide details of the area of practice associated with the content of the poster or oral presentation. This is a free text area which allows subspecialities or multiple areas to be documented. However the areas documented may align with the ANZCAP speciality areas of practice.
Remember if you are including the LX in a recognition portfolio then the area of practice documented in the LX must align with the speciality area that you are being recognised in.
Practice Recognition Level
The pharmacist should indicate in the LX which of the three levels of recognition (Pharmacist Resident, Pharmacist Registrar or Pharmacist Consultant) they are currently practicing at. When determining which level of recognition aligns with their experience, they are encouraged to refer to the ANZCAP recognition definitions and descriptors. This provides further guidance on markers of performance for each ANZCAP recognition level.
The Conference Research Activity Learning Experience is mapped to:
Domain 5 of the National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2016. Please note that not all the domain 5 indicators listed in this document may be relevant to this Learning Experience.
Domain 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 of the Competence Standards for Pharmacists in Aotearoa New Zealand Pharmacists, 2023. Please note that not all the Domain 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 behaviours listed in these competence standards may be relevant to this Learning Experience.
Reflection & Goal Development
The purpose of this LX is to support self-reflection on how the experience has influenced current or future professional practice, and to help the pharmacist set developmental goals for future contributions of this nature.
Reflection
The pharmacist is asked to independently reflect and document the strengths and areas for development identified while completing this experience.
Development Goals
The pharmacist is encouraged to utilize the SMART goal technique to develop any learning or development goals that are identified from their reflection on this experience.
Collaborator
Pharmacists may engage in discussion with professional peers, mentors or managers to encourage reflective practice. However, this is an Endorsed Learning Experience (LX) and therefore the LX should be completed independently by the pharmacist without collaboration.
Supporting Evidence
The Conference Research Activity LX is an Endorsed Learning Experience therefore supporting evidence is mandatory (indicated by the *). Examples of supporting evidence that should be included in this LX includes:
Poster or presentation delivered at the conference and
Confirmation email from the organisation or professional body organising conference - confirming that the work has been accepted via their peer reviewed process.
Remember that supporting evidence in an LX is a great way to showcase your skills and knowledge. The LX details and supporting evidence can be shared using custom portfolios. So use supporting evidence that best showcases your experience and impact!
LX Documentation
Evidence of the Conference Research Activity is documented directly into the ANZCAP digital platform as an Endorsed Conference Research Activity LX. The LX is an electronic template which allows you to directly document all of the required information and attach the required supporting evidence.
For further step by step instructions on how to do this please refer to the How to complete a Learning Experience article.
