Summary

This article contains information on how to complete an Autonomous TEACH.

What is the Autonomous TEACH LX?

The Autonomous Education Development and/or Delivery (TEACH) Learning Experience is an Autonomous Learning Experience (LX) and can be used to document and guide self-reflection of a pharmacist's contribution to the development of education material or resources and/or delivery of educational content to a group of learners

It is a Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) tool that can be used for inclusion towards ANZCAP recognition.

The main outcome of the LX is to record evidence of current professional practice in a situation that utilizes skills including communication, expert knowledge, presentation and group learning facilitation in a chosen professional area.

Examples

  • Developing educational content for an Adpha seminar on a chosen topic.

  • Facilitating a university undergraduate or intern training workshop.

  • Developing content for an introduction learning package for new pharmacists rotating into your practice area.

  • Developing education content for onboarding new staff into your pharmacy.

Autonomous Education Development and/or Delivery (TEACH) Process

Prepare

Engage

Reflect

  1. The pharmacist identifies a situation where they have been involved in the development or delivery of educational material, ensuring that the practice recognition level and clinical setting/topic that the TEACH is to focus on is appropriate.

  1. Pharmacist completes the educational experience and if possible, obtains feedback from the participants who took part.

  1. Pharmacist completes the Autonomous TEACH LX which includes documentation, reflection and developmental goal setting.

An Autonomous TEACH is best completed as a retrospective reflection.

The total time to complete the Autonomous TEACH LX should take between 10-15 minutes. However, the educational development and/or delivery is likely to have occurred over an extended period of time prior to the LX being completed.

Choosing a TEACH Situation

There are a wide variety of educational situations that may be appropriate for reflection using the TEACH LX. See some suggested examples above. The pharmacist may be involved in development, delivery or both development and delivery of the education material. Ultimately the exact scenario, role played, and the skills expected by the pharmacist will vary depending on the practice recognition level they are aiming to meet.

Learning Experience Details

The TEACH LX requires the pharmacist to document the following information:

Date

Document the date that the educational activity was delivered.

Brief Description

Provide a brief description of the experience. Some examples of the type of information that may be included in this section are:

  • An overview of the content and purpose of the education material

  • The education level and role of participants undertaking the education session

  • The learning objectives of the education session

  • why the experience aligns with this type of LX (i.e. what knowledge and skills does it show)

  • the specific enabling competencies that apply to this experience (see practice recognition level section below).

Area of Practice

Provide details of the area of practice associated with the educational activity. This is a free text area which allows subspecialities or multiple areas to be documented. However the areas documented may align with the ANZCAP speciality areas of practice.

Remember if you are including the LX in a recognition portfolio then the area of practice documented in the LX must align with the speciality area that you are being recognised in.

Practice Recognition Level and Complexity

The TEACH LX is mapped to:

  • Domain 5 of the National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2016. Please note that not all the domain 5 indicators listed in this document may be relevant to this Learning Experience.

  • Domain 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 of the Competence Standards for Pharmacists in Aotearoa New Zealand Pharmacists, 2023. Please note that not all the Domain 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 behaviours listed in these competence standards may be relevant to this Learning Experience.

The pharmacist must identify a TEACH LX opportunity that applies to their current level of practice (e.g. ANZCAP resident, registrar or consultant) and area of specialty.

In some scenarios the same type of education development or delivery may be used for pharmacists aiming for different levels of practice recognition. However, the complexity and expected knowledge, skills and role will vary.

Please refer to the ANZCAP recognition descriptors article for the further guidance on markers of performance for each ANZCAP recognition level.

Collaborator

Pharmacists may have engaged in discussion with professional peers, mentors or managers to encourage reflective practice. However, this is an Autonomous Learning Experience and therefore the final submission should be completed by the pharmacist without collaboration.

Reflection & Goal Setting

The pharmacist is encouraged to utilize the SMART goal technique to develop any learning or development goals that are identified from self-reflection after the experience.

Forms and Templates

Evidence of the TEACH activity is documented directly into the ANZCAP digital platform as an Autonomous LX. For further step by step instructions on how to do this please refer to the How to complete a Learning Experience article.

If ANZCAP members wish to use a TEACH form from their own organisation, the completed form may be uploaded into the Supporting Evidence section of the LX. Please note that for the LX to become validated the candidate must still complete all sections marked with an asterisk *.
