Summary
This article contains information on how to complete an Autonomous Case Presentation LX.
What is the Case Presentation LX?
The Autonomous Case Presentation Learning Experience (LX) is an Autonomous LX that can be used to record and guide self-reflection on an occasion where a pharmacist has verbally presented a case to colleagues. The case included in the oral presentation will be retrospective in nature and can be from a direct patient interaction or indirect pharmacy practice activity.
Similar to a Case Based Discussion (CBD), an Autonomous Case Presentation (CP) allows the pharmacist to highlight professional knowledge, judgement and problems solving skills through retrospective review of a real case they were involved in. However, the setting is a more formal presentation to a group of colleagues rather than a one-on-one collaborator interaction.
This LX is designed to encourage self-reflection of current professional practice (knowledge, critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills) in a chosen professional setting or topic.
Examples
Management of a patient with difficult to control blood glucose levels.
Identifying and managing a significant adverse drug reaction.
A patient who has recently had an HMR/RMMR.
Review of a significant medication error that reached a patient at a multi-disciplinary mortality and morbidity meeting.
Management of a person with multi-resistant infection.
Education strategies used in a group of undergraduate students being supervised on a placement.
Case Presentation Activity Process
Prepare
Engage
Reflect
The pharmacist identifies a case suitable for presentation and arranges to present this at an appropriate setting.
Pharmacist completes the case presentation.
Pharmacist completes the Autonomous Case Presentation LX which includes documentation, reflection and developmental goal setting.
The total time for a Case Presentation will vary depending on the presentation setting and circumstances. After completion of the presentation the documentation and reflection should take between 10-15 minutes.
Choosing a Case
A Case Presentation can focus on either a direct patient case or indirect practice experience. See examples above.
A Case Presentation will be completed retrospectively i.e.; the presentation will cover a situation where the pharmacist has been involved in the care of a patient or has undertaken an indirect pharmacy service activity. Ultimately the case, complexity and presentation style will vary depending on the professional setting that the pharmacist has access to present at and the practice recognition level they are aiming to meet.
Learning Experience Details
The CP LX requires the pharmacist to document the following information:
Date
Document the date that the CP took place.
Brief Description
Provide a brief description of the experience. Some examples of the type of information that may be included in this section are:
A summary of the case being presented.
The audience to whom the case was presented.
Why the experience aligns with this type of LX (i.e. what knowledge and skills does it show).
The impact of the experience on professional practice and/or
The specific enabling competencies that apply to this experience (see practice recognition level section below).
Area of Practice
Provide details of the area of practice associated with the presented case. This is a free text area which allows subspecialities or multiple areas to be documented. However, the areas documented may align with the ANZCAP speciality areas of practice.
Remember if you are including the LX in a recognition portfolio then the area of practice documented in the LX must align with the speciality area that you are being recognised in.
Practice Recognition Level and Complexity
The Case Presentation Learning Experience is mapped to:
Domain 1 & 2 of the National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2016. Please note that not all the domain 1 & 2 indicators listed in this document may be relevant to this Learning Experience.
Domain 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 of the Competence Standards for Pharmacists in Aotearoa New Zealand Pharmacists, 2023. Please note that not all the Domain 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 behaviours listed in these competence standards may be relevant to this Learning Experience.
Remember if you are including the LX in a recognition portfolio then the area of practice documented in the LX must align with the speciality area that you are being recognised in.
The complexity of the presented case should be appropriate to the current level of practice (e.g. ANZCAP resident, registrar or consultant).
Please refer to the ANZCAP recognition descriptors article for the further guidance on markers of performance for each ANZCAP recognition level.
Collaborator
Pharmacists may have engaged in discussion with professional peers, mentors or managers to encourage reflective practice. However, this is an Autonomous Learning Experience and therefore the final submission should be completed by the pharmacist without collaboration.
Reflection & Goal Setting
The pharmacist is encouraged to utilize the SMART goal technique to develop any learning or development goals that are identified from self-reflection after the experience.
Forms and Templates
Evidence of the CP is documented directly into the ANZCAP digital platform as an Autonomous LX. For further step by step instructions on how to do this please refer to the How to complete a Learning Experience article.
If ANZCAP members wish to use a CP form from their own organisation, the completed form may be uploaded into the Supporting Evidence section of the LX. Please note that for the LX to become validated the candidate must still complete all sections marked with an asterisk *.
