What is the Professional Practice Standards Tool (PPS)? 

The PPS is a tool used to self-assess whether an individual pharmacist’s professional performance enables the delivery of safe, high-quality, reliable and clinically effective healthcare services and supports the quality use of medicines. It allows for reflection of one’s performance with the purpose of improving practice.

The main outcome of this tool should be to promote the pharmacist to engage in self-reflection of current practice and the creation of an Action Plan for implementation of identified developmental goals.

Reflection & Goal Development

The main aim of the PPS as a Learning Experience is to promote feedback and reflection of a pharmacist's current professional practice against the professional standards. Through self- assessment and identification of areas for improvement, appropriate goals can be set

Reflection

Opportunities for self-reflection of current practice are included at each stage of the PPS tool. At the completion of the program, the self-reflections made throughout are summarised for review and are then carried over to the Action Plan. This enable appropriately targeted developmental goals to be set which will best enable improved practice.

Development Goals

Completion of the PPS tool auto generates an Action Plan which includes the following sections

• Your own self-reflection of your current level of professional practice for each component of the professional standard.

• Information and resources to enable deeper understanding of each professional standard.

• A section to document goals- titles Quality Improvement Actions with recommended development activities which are tailored towards the requirements of each professional standard.

At the completion of the Quality Improvement Action Plan a final evaluation and reflection activity is undertaken to summarise the activity. The completed document should be uploaded in the Supporting Evidence section of the Professional Practice Assessment tool LX available on the ANZCAP digital platform. The pharmacist and collaborator will discuss how to put the Action Plan into practice and an appropriate time period over which this will take place.

Practice Recognition Level 

The PPS LX is mapped to Domain 1, 2, 4 & 5 of the National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2016. 

Please refer to the ANZCAP recognition descriptors article for the further guidance on markers of performance for each ANZCAP recognition level. The pharmacist and collaborator should indicate on the learning experience tool which of the three levels of practice recognition (resident, registrar, consultant) they are currently practicing at or a candidate for. Please note that not all the domain 1, 2, 4 & 5 indicators listed in this document may be relevant to this LX.

Collaborator 

The collaborator must be a pharmacist who has completed their own PPS self-assessment and who is ideally more senior to the pharmacist. Collaborators must be professionally competent in the standards being addressed as part of the PPS Tool.
