What is the Case Presentation LX?
The Independent Case Presentation is an Independent Learning Experience that can be used to record and guide self-reflection on an occasion where a pharmacist has orally presented a case to colleagues. The case included in the oral presentation will be retrospective in nature and can be from a direct patient or indirect patient area of practice.
It is a Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) that can be used for inclusion towards Advancing practice recognition.
Similar to a Case Based Discussion (CBD), a case presentation allows the pharmacist to highlight professional knowledge, judgement and problems solving skills through retrospective review of a real case they have been involved in. However, the setting is a more formal oral presentation to a group of colleagues rather than a one-on-one collaborator.
The main outcome of the tool is to record evidence of the learning experience and encourage self-reflection of current professional practice (knowledge, critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills) in a chosen professional setting or topic.
Examples
Management of a person with difficult to control blood glucose levels
Review of a significant medication error that reached a patient at a multi-disciplinary mortality and morbidity meeting
Management of a person with multi-resistant infection
Education strategies used in a group of undergraduate students being supervised on a placement

The pharmacist identifies an opportunity to participate in a case presentation opportunity.
Pharmacist completes the case presentation
Pharmacist completes the Independent Case Presentation tool which includes documentation, reflection and development goal setting
The total time for a CP is variable depending on the case presentation opportunity available. After completion of the presentation the documentation and reflection should take between 10-15 minutes.
Choosing a Case
A Case Presentation can focus on either a direct patient or indirect patient case. See examples above.
Ideally a CP should focus on a case that is retrospective i.e., a case where the pharmacist has previously been involved in the delivery or care. Ultimately the case, complexity and presentation style will vary depending on the professional setting that the pharmacist has available to present at and the practice recognition level they are aiming to meet.
Practice Recognition Level
The pharmacist will independently identify a case presentation opportunity that applies to the level of practice recognition that they are currently performing at or working towards (resident, register, consultant) to include in the conference/seminar report.

Complexity
In some scenarios the same case may be used for pharmacists aiming for different levels of practice recognition. However, the complexity and expected knowledge and skills will vary.
Collaborator
Pharmacists may have engaged in discussion with professional peers, mentors or managers to encourage reflective practice. However, this is an Independent Learning Experience and therefore the final submission should be completed by the pharmacist without collaboration.
Reflection & Goal Setting
The pharmacist is encouraged to utilize the SMART goal technique to develop any learning or development goals that are identified from self-reflection after the experience.
Forms and Templates
The CP tool is available on the ANZCAP digital platform. Ideally pharmacists will enter relevant information into the digital tool after completion of the case presentation.
Alternatively, pharmacists may use CP tools from their own workplace and upload it to the digital platform where they can then confirm completion of an Independent Case Presentation Learning Experience.
