What is the Journal Club Presentation LX?

The Independent Journal Club Presentation is an Independent Learning Experience that can be used to document an occasion where a pharmacist has presented relevant research to a group of colleagues and self-reflected on their ability to demonstrate knowledge of research critical appraisal, research methodology and ability to apply research evidence into professional practice. It can also aid the development of formal oral presentation skills to colleagues.

It is a Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) tool that can be used for inclusion towards ANZCAP recognition.

The main outcome of the tool is to record evidence of the learning experience and encourage self-reflection of current professional practice (research knowledge, critical appraisal and presentation skills) in a chosen professional setting or topic.

Pharmacist completes the independent journal club presentation tool which includes documentation, reflection and development goal setting

The total time for a journal club presentation is variable depending on the opportunity available. After completion of the presentation the documentation and reflection should take between 10-15 minutes.

Choosing a Situation or Skill

A journal club presentation can focus on research that relates to the pharmacists' chosen area of practice or interest. This may be in a direct patient or indirect research article.

Practice Recognition Level

The pharmacist will independently identify a journal club presentation opportunity that applies to the level of practice recognition that they are currently performing at or working towards (resident, register, consultant) to include in the Independent Journal Club Presentation Learning Experience.

Complexity

In some scenarios the same research may be used for pharmacists aiming for different levels of practice recognition. However, the complexity and knowledge and skills expected to be displayed will vary.

Collaborator

Pharmacists may have engaged in discussion with professional peers, mentors or managers to encourage reflective practice. However, this is an Independent Learning Experience and therefore the final submission should be completed by the pharmacist without collaboration.

Reflection & Goal Setting

The pharmacist is encouraged to utilize the SMART goal technique to develop any learning or development goals that are identified from self-reflection after the experience.

Forms and Templates

The journal club presentation tool is available on the Practice Recognition Digital platform. Ideally pharmacists will enter relevant information into the digital tool after completion of the journal club presentation.

Alternatively, pharmacists may use journal club presentation tools from their own workplace and upload it to the digital platform where they can then confirm completion of an Independent Reflection Learning Experience.
