This article contains information on how to complete an Independent Autonomous Case Presentation.

What is the Case Presentation LX? 

The Independent Autonomous Case Presentation is an Independent Autonomous Learning Experience (LX) that can be used to record and guide self-reflection on an occasion where a pharmacist has orally verbally presented a case to colleagues. The case included in the oral presentation will be retrospective in nature and can be from a direct patient or indirect patient area of practice. 

It is a Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) that An Autonomous Case presentation can be used for inclusion towards ANCAP recognition. 

Similar to a Case Based Discussion (CBD), a case presentation allows the pharmacist to highlight professional knowledge, judgement and problems solving skills through retrospective review of a real case they have been involved in. However, the setting is a more formal oral presentation to a group of colleagues rather than a one-on-one collaborator interaction.  

The main outcome of the tool Autonomous Case Presentation is to record evidence of the learning experience and encourage self-reflection of current professional practice (knowledge, critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills) in a chosen professional setting or topic. 

Examples

  • Management of a person with difficult to control blood glucose levels 

  • Identifying and managing a significant adverse drug reaction 

  • A patient who has recently had an HMR/RMMR 

  • Review of a significant medication error that reached a patient at a multi-disciplinary mortality and morbidity meeting 

  • Management of a person with multi-resistant infection 

  • Education strategies used in a group of undergraduate students being supervised on a placement

  1. Pharmacist completes the Independent Autonomous Case Presentation tool LX which includes documentation, reflection and development goal setting  

Tip

The total time for a CP is variable depending on the case presentation opportunity available. After completion of the presentation the documentation and reflection should take between 10-15 minutes. 

Choosing a Case 

A Case Presentation can focus on either a direct patient or indirect patient case. See examples above. 

Ideally a CP should focus on a case that is retrospective i.e., a case where the pharmacist has previously been involved in the delivery or care. Ultimately the case, complexity and presentation style will vary depending on the professional setting that the pharmacist has available access to present at and the practice recognition level they are aiming to meet.

The Case Presentation Learning Experience is mapped to:

  • Domain 1 & 2 of the National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2016. Please note that not all the domain 1 & 2 indicators listed in this document may be relevant to this Learning Experience.

  • Domain 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 of the Competence Standards for Pharmacists in Aotearoa New Zealand Pharmacists, 2023. Please note that not all the Domain 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 behaviours listed in these competence standards may be relevant to this Learning Experience.

The pharmacist must identify a case presentation opportunity that applies to the their current level of practice recognition that they are currently performing at or working towards ((e.g. ANZCAP resident, register , or consultant) to include in the conference/seminar report. and area of specialty.

Complexity 

In some scenarios the same case may be used for pharmacists aiming for different levels of practice recognition. However, the complexity and expected knowledge and & skills will vary. 

Collaborator 

Pharmacists may have engaged in discussion with professional peers, mentors or managers to encourage reflective practice. However, this is an Independent Autonomous Learning Experience and therefore the final submission should be completed by the pharmacist without collaboration. 

Reflection & Goal Setting 

 The pharmacist is encouraged to utilize the SMART goal technique to develop any learning or development goals that are identified from self-reflection after the experience. 

Forms and Templates 

The Evidence of the CP tool is available on documented directly into the ANZCAP digital platform . Ideally pharmacists will enter relevant information into the digital tool after completion of the case presentation. Alternatively, pharmacists may use CP tools from their own workplace and upload it to the digital platform where they can then confirm completion of an Independent Case Presentation Learning Experience. as an Autonomous Learning Experience (LX).
