Recognition Levels and Descriptions

As outlined in the Competency Standards Framework, professional practice exists on a continuum where pharmacy technicians develop and grow throughout their careers. This development occurs through the accumulation of experience, ongoing education, and progressive expansion of capabilities.

To describe the progression along the practice continuum, the Framework uses three defined levels of practice. The terminology used to describe these levels is General, Stage 2 and Stage 3.

The levels of ANZCAP recognition correspond with the levels in the Framework with Stage 2 being Experienced and Stage 3 being Advanced.

Recognition is not available for the General level as this is considered the minimum required level of practice expected of a pharmacy technician.

General

A General Pharmacy Technician is a core member of the pharmacy team who performs essential medicines management and patient care tasks under a pharmacist’s supervision. They work within a defined scope of practice, demonstrating competence aligned with legal, ethical, and professional standards. They communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, showing cultural awareness, accountability, and commitment to professional development.

Experienced (ANZCAP Tech – Exp.)

An Experienced Pharmacy Technician demonstrates comprehensive, high-level knowledge and skills within a defined scope of practice under a pharmacist’s supervision or direction. They apply evidence-based practice in generalist or specialised areas to enhance medicines management and patient care. Utilising their experience and effective communication, they support team performance, supervise colleagues, and contribute to training and workforce development. They actively engage in quality initiatives and service improvement to optimise pharmacy operations and patient outcomes.

Advanced (FANZCAP-Tech)

An Advanced Pharmacy Technician demonstrates advanced expertise in a generalist or specialised scope of practice and provides leadership within their workplace or the profession with many responsibilities performed independently within professional and legislative supervision requirements.. They collaborate across teams to drive system-level improvements in medicines management and patient care. Advanced technicians lead service development, policy implementation, and/or workforce growth e.g. through mentorship, management, and education. They contribute to research, quality improvement or organisational change.

Pharmacy Technicians who achieve ANZCAP recognition at the Experienced or Advanced level may nominate one or two of 12 areas of specialty pharmacy practice to indicate the area/s in which they have attained their skills and experience.
